Motorcycle Thugs Attack Burmese Stu

On August 11, at 11 PM hooligans on motorcycles made their first attack
against the Burmese and Thai students continuing their sit-in at the SLORC
Embassy in Bangkok. A second attack took place at 4 AM. Eight students,
including two Thais, were injured by flying bottles or pipes and required
hospital treatment. Broken bottles, sharpened sticks and pipes were found
at the scene.

Burmese students managed to capture a Thai man who appeared to be directing
the attacks from a nearby pedestrian overpass. He was carrying a piece of
pipe and a screwdriver sharpened as a weapon. Not long after he had been
taken into custody by Thai police he was released.

A related incident occurred just across the road from the Embassy at 4 in
the afternoon of August 12. In the compound of St. Louis Hospital , a
group of Burmese students preparing to return to the Safe Area after
donating blood, was also attacked. Three motorcycles were involved, with
the passengers attempting to strike the Burmese with sticks. Fortunately
noone was injured in this incident.

Police security at the Embassy is said to have been increased.
