US warns Myanmar junta over standoff with Aung San Suu Kyi

WASHINGTON, Aug 13 (AFP) - The United States warned Myanmar's military
rulers Thursday to ensure the well-being of Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been
barred from traveling outside the capital Yangon.
"We are gravely concerned about the health and safety of Aung San Suu Kyi
and hold the Burmese authorities responsible for ensuring her health and
welfare," said State Department deputy spokesman James Foley.
Aung San Suu Kyi was locked in a roadside confrontation with authorities
for a second day Thursday at almost the same location where she was stopped
last month.
The US embassy in Yangon has asked for permission for officials to travel
to the site of the standoff "to observe the situation and speak with Aung
San Suu Kyi," said Foley.
But authorities have yet to respond to the request, he said.
"We support her right to travel freely in Burma and urge the government to
address the situation through dialogue," Foley added.
It was Aung San Suu Kyi's fourth failed attempt to travel to meet
provincial supporters in little over a month.
US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright issued a similar warning last
month in the previous standoff.
