KNU Statement Supporting Move for P

KNU Statement Concerning Demand for Convening Parliament
August 17, 1998

Concerning the demand by the National League for Democracy (NLD) to convene
the parliament by the 21st of August 1998, the KNU has to make a statement
of its position as follows:

1. The fact that the parliament could not have been convened, a government
in accordance with the wishes of the people could not have been formed and
the transfer of state power could not have been affected, within 60 days
after the general election of May 1990, was a disastrous matter. It was a
criminal breech of trust by the SLORC (presently the SPDC) military leaders.
2. Since the demand by the NLD to convene the parliament by 21-8-98, is
done in correspondence with its obligation to respect the wishes of the
voters, the people from all walks of life, and to realize their will, it is
an entirely correct demand. We, the KNU, whole-heartedly support the demand
of the NLD.
3. Acts of the SPDC military leaders, heaping various forms of oppression
and threats upon Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the NLD leaders, in addition to
ignoring the correct demand of the NLD, up to this day, are tantamount to
war against the people, comprising of various ethnic nationalities. This
shows that the SPDC is still following the policy of rule by military
dictatorship and violence by armed suppression.
4. The developing confrontation, currently, is not a confrontation between
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the SPDC military leaders, but it is a
confrontation and conflict between the SPDC military dictators on the one
side, and the people from all walks of life on the other. As the act of
blocking Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's way, in her travel and peaceful work, for
the fourth time now, has been worsening the problem and creating more
tension, we strongly denounce it.
5. At this time, there is no other way than to convene the parliament and
begin to resolve the problems peacefully. Accordingly we, the KNU, strongly
urge the SPDC military dictators to convene the parliament by the 21st of
August 1998.
