ALL BURMA FEDERATION OF TRADE UNIONS
Statement Number 3

(1) Burma is in crisis- politically, economically and socially. One
group is prospering at the expense of the majority who are facing grave
problems.

(2) Workers employed in enterprises owned by government, cooperatives,
private individuals and joint ventures are underpaid, salaries are not
commensurate with the cost of living and have no job security.

(3) Women workers are disadvantaged and experience sexual harassment
from the authorities.

(4) Minor children are forced to work at very low wages and are abused,
beaten and assaulted.

(5) The unemployment rate is increasing daily. Because of the absence of
job security or guarantees, workers have no option but to accept any job
on any wage just to survive.

(6) The entire work force is denied human rights embodied in the United
Nations Declaration of Human Rights and the rights to free association,
to form unions, and to make demands as provided for by the International
Labour Organisation.

(7) Therefore, as one solid work force we demand
  a) that all workers rights be restored
  b) better working conditions
  c) recognition of unions
  d) unity of the entire work force
  e) cooperation and interaction with unions and democratic forces
internationally to achieve world peace AND
(8) To obtain national reconciliation, democracy and peace
a) genuine dialogue be held for a political settlement between the State
Peace and Development Council, the National League for Democracy and the
different national groups;
b) parliament be convened as soon as possible, in accordance with the
results of the 1990 elections;
c) all political prisoners be immediately and unconditionally released.

The time has come for all to unite and be prepared and by going step by
step, engage in the struggle for FREEDOM, JUSTICE and PEACE.
