Statement of the National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma

--------------------------------------------------------------------

				August 24, 1998

Military Should Support NLD To Rebuild The Nation

The National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma wholeheartedly
welcomes the decision by the Central Executive Committee of the National
League for Democracy (NLD) to convene the Parliament. The NLD took the
action because it has the legal authority to do so and also because it is
morally obligated to fulfil the wish of the people as expressed through
the ballot in 1990.

Prime Minister Dr. Sein Win said, "The generals who rule the country by
force have already been given eight years to honor the results of the
elections they themselves had held. Instead, they are deliberately
undermining the election results and trying to install a military
dictatorship in Burma. The NLD fought against the move because it is
against the wish of the people."

The decision by the generals to reject the NLD and assume the leadership
of the country, has bankrupt Burma and brought it to a brink of disaster.
Dr. Sein Win said, "It is time for the military to wake up, forsake the
generals' dream and support the NLD in its efforts to rebuild the
country."

The National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma, which came into
being with the mandate of the elected representatives of the NLD, will do
whatever is in its power to support the NLD and help it to realize the
aspirations of the people. The National Coalition Government of the
Union of Burma will continue to further the cause of the NLD and carry
out its duties as mandated until democracy and human rights are restored
in the country.
