Myanmar junta says NLD threatens national security

YANGON, Sept 2 (AFP) - Myanmar's junta Wednesday said an opposition vow to
convene parliament was an unacceptable threat to national security and
promised stern action if the plan went ahead.

In a statement, the ruling military also accused foreign governments of
supporting the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Aung
San Suu Kyi and using sanctions to hinder progress toward democracy.

"The NLD's decision to hold a national parliament on their own comes up as
a threat to Myanmar's national security," the statement attached to the
junta's regular information sheet said.

The statement entitled "National Security Over Party Politics" said the
junta would not tolerate the NLD setting up a "parallel government" which
would find support amongst ethnic rebels in the remote northeast.

"In this scenario, the government will be left with no choice but to take
necessary legal action in safeguarding its national security."

The NLD says it plans to convene the parliament elected in 1990 polls which
the opposition won by a landslide. The junta has refused to recognise the
result and hand over power.

In Yangon Wednesday some 150 students staged a demonstration against the
junta and security forces sealed off the surrounding area, witnesses said.
