Views of ABYMU regarding the news on the Burmanet and current situation

Since Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her NLD party have called for the parliament
to be convened, there are many criticism, prediction, support, disagreement
and rumor on the Burmanet.

The following are the different points of the issue, in short.

(1) It is wrong to call parliament.
(2) Government should not be founded.
(3) Foreign countries will not give support Daw Aung San Suu Kyi when she
announces new government.
(4) Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will probably crush on the armed forces.
(5) There will be a problem between Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other ethnic
forces.
(6) Only dialogue should be called on.

Regarding the calling for parliament, the ABYMU has repeatedly expressed
its support to the calls by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and is very optimistic on
it. It also repeatedly expressed its willingness to cooperate with this
call in all fronts. Appropriate ways for the Buddhist monks will be used to
make the call meets.

Calling for Parliament is a legitimate and lawful responsibility assigned
by the people in the 1990 general election. It was a free and fair election
organized by the army and army has promised to transfer the power to the
winning party of the election. The senior leaders of the army officially
said "Army would go back to barracks after transferring the power to the
winning party". NLD is a political party legally founded within the legal
frame of the country. During the election, it also gained the votes from
the army personnel. It is right for the NLD to call for the parliament
which is in accordance with the legitimacy. NLD, as a legally founded
political party, has responsibility to run in the election, to call for
parliament after its victory in the elction, form government and begin
running the country. Election winning political party cannot stand idly
after the victory in the election. Political party must work on the
political activities assigned by the people in the election.

Regarding the fact that foreign countries would not give support after
forming parliament or government, here is a clarification. Whether or not
giving support to the newly-established government in other country will
depends on the individual country respectively. While many countries are
ultimately support to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, we should not worry so much.

Regarding the fact that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi would probably crush on the
armed forces, Daw Suu has never mentioned or intended for it. She has
never attacked to the armed forces or any personnel particularly. What she
always refers to the armed forces is "Armed forces founded by my father".

Regarding the fact that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi would probably crush on the
armed forces, it is merely a groundless accusation. It aims only to deter
the supports of ethnic forces to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. NLD has reached a
discussion and with the United Nationalities League for Democracy
(political party of the ethnic nationalities inside Burma). Negotiation has
been reached with this ethnic party. During the Mae Tha Yaw Hta ethnic
seminar, all the ethnic representatives focused on supporting Daw Aung San
Suu Kyi. There is an understanding has been reached during the seminar to
have a dialogue with her in future national convention. Individual groups
has expressed their support to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's move calling for
parliament. In a telephone conversation with a leader from National
Democratic Front, he said "Since there is a information saying that SPDC
might use to intervene the calling parliament by the NLD, the NDF is
planning to work on defending the sake of the people in Burma".

Some are claiming that more effort to call on dialogue should be made. It
is good if it is possible. However, should we wonder that we are going back
from the half way through the struggle. Calling for dialogue has been made
for several years, but SPDC has ignored this call. It is necessary and fair
to call a parliament after long time SPDC has failed to meet. A question
should be raised under which condition dialogue should be convened. No one
can guarantee or estimate how long the dialogue will go under the SPDC.
There are some examples of waiting for election result or on-going
SPDC-sponsored national Convention for indefinite time. In order to avoid
the SPDC's possible time buying method, call for parliament has been made.

Some people probably believe that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi must do what they
wanted her to do. Some are directing her and giving her orders to do this
and not to do that. It is very sad to hear these. ABYMU believes that Daw
Aung San Suu Kyi is courageous and wise enough to plan for the future and
has a political ability to carry on. There is no need to be confused.

People have awaken from the standstill political situation when NLD's call
for the parliament. They have felt that they just see the ray of hope and
ready to support for the change. If we can not move one step forward while
there is an opportunity in our hands, achieving democracy, human rights and
peace will be impossible. As the NLD leaders said " Calling for convening
parliament is for the sake of the people." Therefore, we would like to urge
not to make destructive effort to the calling for convening parliament,
please give all-round support to this call.
