ABSDF SUPPORTS PARLIAMENTARY REPRESENTATIVE COMMITTEE LED BY NLD

The All Burma Students' Democratic Front (ABSDF) welcomes and
fully supports the formation of a 10-member Committee "to
representative elected members of parliament" led by the National
League for Democracy (NLD).

The Parliamentary Committee, headed by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, was
announced on September 16, 1998.

The ABSDF also extends its support for the nomination of Dr. Saw
Myra Aung as Chairman of the "People's Parliament".

ABSDF chairman Dr. Naing Aung says the formation of the
Parliamentary Committee is an extremely significant political
development.

"This is a direct challenge to the generals in Rangoon. We
believe that it is a correct and timely move, particularly as it
has been announced on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the
military's bloody coup in 1988.

"The support of the people of Burma is crucial for parliament to
be successfully convened. The people of Burma must lend their
unquestionable support to the parliament, which will be the first
step to democratization in Burma," Dr. Naing Aung.

The ABSDF is also calling on the international community to
recognise and extend their support for the Parliamentary
Committee.

"The international community has in the past been relatively
indecisive in taking action against the Burmese military regime.
We are now calling on the international community to voice its
support for the Parliamentary Committee, the NLD and democratic
change in Burma."

The ABSDF has vowed to garner support for the People's
Parliament, including organising the people of Burma and lobbying
world governments.
