Burma releases 101 Thai prisoners

Burma has released one-hundred-and-one Thai prisoners as a gesture of
goodwill.

Most of the prisoners were fishermen and loggers who had entered Myanmar
territory illegally.

A Burmese diplomat said the release was a present to the Thai King,
Bhumibol Adulyadej.

He said the number of prisoners symbolised Burma's wish that the king, now
seventy-two, should live longer than one hundred years.

But one report said the release was a gift from Myanmar's head of military
intelligence General Khin Nyunt to Thailand's outgoing army commander in
chief, General Chetta Thanajaro. General Chetta has been known for his
efforts to maintain good relations between the two countries.
