SUPPORT FOR DEMOCRACY AND PEACEFUL CHANGE IN BURMA

This is to state that the California Burma Democracy Activists are in
total support for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the NLD in all of their latest
actions, including, the formation of the 10 member parliament and the
declaration that all laws passed by SLORC/SPDC be null and void.

SLORC/SPDC is an illegal military dictatorship from inception. They took
over power after BSPP lost the elections to Aung San Suu Kyi's NLD in the
one and only general elections held in Burma since Ne Win took over from
the Prime Minister U Nu in 1962.

Under military rule, Burma (now called Myanmar) which in the 1950's was a
leader in South East Asia, is now a basket case. The people are oppressed
by the military who rule by edict with no regard to the rule of law and
basic human rights. More than seventy five percent of the country's
budget is used to support the military of four hundred thousand men and
pay for unwarranted purchases of military hardware. The people, including
ordinary soldiers struggle to provide food on the table from one day to
the next. Rations for the soldiers is insufficient and they are allowed
to grow, take or steal from the villages.
 .
We believe that a popular civilian government, made up of elected members
of parliament, embracing a democratic system is the only way to save
Burma and its people. We urge that this change be made peacefully through
dialogue, negotiations and accommodation. SLORC/SPDC must take this
important step towards change now, failure to do so will plunge the
country into a fathomless pit and darkness from which it may never
recover.

We urge the International Community and the United Nations to publicly
support the efforts of Aung San Suu Kyi and use all means to pressure the
military government towards change. We also ask that the leaders of the
United States, as the most powerful champion of democracy, to be more
forceful in supporting the democracy movement in Burma and to make it an
important part of its foreign policy.
