UN High Commissioner critises Burmese junta

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson, has
urged the Burmese authorities to release all political prisoners.

She also condemned what she described as the increasing repression of
Burma's political opposition, and the repeated harassment of the National
League for Democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.

The BBC Geneva correspondent says that the strongly worded statement from
Mary Robinson was issued in Geneva after the UN High Commissioner failed to
get a satisfactory response after raising the issues with the Burmese
foreign minister U Ohn Gyaw last month.

She also renewed her demand for the United Nations human rights
investigator Rajsoomer Lallah to be allowed to visit Burma.
