ILLEGAL WORKERS
Over 270,000 sent home
Move to alleviate umemployment woes
Anucha Charoenpo
More than 270,000 illegal foreign workers have been deported since January
as part of government policy to replace alien workers with Thais.
Immigration Bureau commissioner Chidchai Wannasathit said yesterday the
office has so far deported 271,019 illegal foreign workers and arrested 34
people for smuggling foreigners into the country.
Furthermore, he said, 111 others have been arrested for housing foreign
workers since January this year.
Pol Lt-Gen Chidchai said he always reminded subordinates not to get
involved in gangs smuggling illegal workers. In doing so they are subject
to serious punishment without leniency, he added.
The bureau has also established a unit to suppress international crimes,
particularly forgery of immigration documents, the flesh trade and
mafia-type activities. Since January, suspects engaging in such crimes were
mostly Chinese.
The immigration police chief said his agency has also drawn up careful
security plans for the Dec 6-20 Asian Games to be held in Bangkok and other
provinces. He has assigned his men to give special attention to sports
venues in other provinces. Classifieds
