Burma Association California Suppor

SUPPORT FOR TEN MEMBER COMMITTEE REPRESENTING ELECTED BURMA LAWMAKERS

Pro-democracy activist residents of California express their total
support for Burma's National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Nobel
Peace Laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. We applaud the NLD's formation of
the ten-member Committee Representing Elected Lawmakers. We commend the
Committee's first acts which nullified all laws passed by the military
junta and its call for the release of political prisoners. We
unconditionally support these actions.

The military regime which has reincarnated itself from State Law and
Order Restoration Council (SLORC) to the State Peace and Development
Council (SPDC) unlawfully usurped state authority in a coup d'etat
against the civilian government of Prime Minister U Nu in 1962.

In the thirty-six years since the military government has misruled Burma,
the country has been driven to poverty. It has become an economic basket
case. Burmese people have been oppressed. Basic human rights are
non-existent in the land. Torture, murder, rape, arson, forced labor,
relocation massive numbers of citizens, closure of school and
universities at the whim of the authorities, indiscriminate searches and
seizures of property have become the norm in that land of terror.

More than 50% of the national budget goes towards maintaining the
military and other security forces. No other nation in the world expends
such a large percentage of the national budget to the extent Burma has.
Especially when Burma has no foreign enemies, the only enemy (of SPDC)
being the Burmese people who yearn only for the return of a
democratically elected government.

We firmly believe that Burma can be saved from disintegration only when a
democratically government is allowed to rule the country We urge the
military junta in Rangoon to immediately engage in dialog with the NLD
leadership including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, leaders of the
ethnic peoples and the students. We are unequivocal in our conviction
that only through dialog can peace and tranquility prevail in Burma and
the nation put on the path towards democracy.

We call upon the United Nations and the international community to
support the Burmese people in their quest for freedom and democracy by
demanding that the ruling junta in Burma begin the process of dialog with
those who would like to pursue a peaceful path towards democracy.
We ask that the Committee Representing Elected Lawmakers be recognized as
the de jure government of Burma and the present representation by the
military regime in the United Nations be replaced by representatives
appointed by the Committee Representing Elected Representatives.
