(1)		ASEAN Steering Committee Discusses Preparations for Sixth ASEAN Summit

		Chairman of the ASEAN Steering Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and
Development Council addressed the Steering Committee Meeting No 3/98 at the
Ministry of Defence  on 15 October.  Chairman of the Steering Committee
Secretary-1  said the Sixth ASEAN Summit will be held in Vietnam in coming
December. He then called on the ministries concerned to make prior
arrangements for the Summit in time. 

(2)		Masses of Shan State (South) Expressed Frustration over NLD's Activities
		Over 33,000 people of various strata of life from Shan State (South) 

expressed their genuine desire to oppose the activities of the National League
for Democracy which is detrimental to National Security and National Interest
at a mass meeting which was held in Taunggyi Township People's Sports Ground
on 15 October. Present were members of Maternal and Child Welfare Association,
Shan State (South) Working Committee for Women's Affairs, Shan Traditional
Cultural Troupe, PaO Literature and Cultural Troupe, members of Shan State
(South) Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross Society,
Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Religious Association, Teachers Training School, Shan
State (South) Nurses Association, Shan State (South) Medical Association,
Artists and Artisans Asiayon (Association), Brokerage Association, Edible Oil
Merchants Association, Rice Merchants Association, Industrialists Association,
All Bus Lines Control Committee, Construction Material Shop Entrepreneurs
Association, representatives of 18 Social and Economic Associations and people
of Taunggyi District and Taunggyi Township. The meeting also tabled and
seconded two motions calling for safeguarding and maintaining economic
development and ensuring food, clothing and shelter needs of the people and
maintaining and safeguarding the stability of the State which has already been
achieved.

(3)		Launching of UNICEF Greeting Cards Sales 

		A ceremony to launch the year 1998 Sales Campaign for UNICEF Greeting Cards
jointly organized by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the
United Nations Women's Association was held at the Strand Hotel 15 October.
Present were diplomatic corps, departmental officials, officials of UN
organizations, persons of non-Governmental organizations and guests. President
of UNWA Mrs Ines de Aguilar and UNICEF Resident Representative Dr Juan Aguilar
Leon gave the introductory speech and explained the purpose of the fund
raising campaign for UNICEF. A video presentation for the origin of UNICEF
Greeting Card Operation was next presented, followed by dances programmes by
school children under the Social Welfare Department. 

(4)		University Academic Council Meets

		University Academic Council of Higher Education Department held its 
2/98 meeting at central council meeting hall of HED (Lower Myanmar ) on 15
October. Minister for Education delivered an address. The rectors and the
principals reported on syllabus and academic matters. Then, the deputy
ministers, the directors-general, the chairmen and the deputy directors-
general took part in the discussions. The meeting will continue on 16 October.

(5)		Minister Accepts Letters of Appointment from FAO Resident  Representative
		Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation received Mr Francis Rinville, the
newly accredited Resident Representative of the United Nations Food and
Agriculture Organization to the Union of Myanmar, at the ministry on 15
October. Mr Francis Rinville presented letters of appointment from Director-
General of FAO. They discussed technological cooperation in development for
agriculture and irrigation sectors with the aid of FAO.
