HANOI, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Vietnam will soon free around
2,600 prisoners in a
fresh amnesty on the heels of a major release of inmates
last month, a source
               close to the government said.

The government would make an announcement on the amnesty in
the near
future, the source said late on Friday night.

"They plan to free around 2,600 prisoners," the source said,
but gave no more
               details.

Vietnamese officials have previously said there will be a
follow-up amnesty to
the release of 5,219 prisoners that marked the country's
anniversary of
               independence on September 2.

But officials and diplomats have said the next amnesty will
probably only involve
               the release of petty offenders.

Leading dissident journalists and Buddhist monks were freed
under the
               September amnesty.
