Police and immigration officers have been ordered to drastically
crack down on around 13,000 illegal workers who have not applied
for work permits.
Tak Governor Huekharn Tomornsak ordered the crackdown because
the authorities had failed to get enough people to register before an
October 5 deadline.
So far only 3,325 people had registered out of an estimated 16,180
workers, said Jirapha Ngarmvivit, an officer attached to Tak
employment service office.
An estimated 12,825 aliens, mostly Burmese, are illegally working in
the province, particularly in the garment industry.
"After the registration period expired on October 5, concerned
agencies were asked to clamp down on non-registered workers.
These workers, if arrested, will be repatriated," said Miss Jirapha.
The Interior Ministry wants employees to register alien workers, for
which they are charged 1,000 baht for the registration fee, 1,000 baht
for the work permit, 700 baht for a medical check-up and another
800 baht for a health insurance card for each worker.
Many business people cannot afford to do this.
