Subject: REMIT: Myanmar Says Over 2,000 Opposition Members Resign
There are reports and witnesses to prove that the rallies and

Myanmar Says Over 2,000 Opposition Members Resign

YANGON, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Myanmar state media said on
Wednesday more than 2,000 members of the opposition
National League for Democracy (NLD) had resigned since
October because they no longer wanted to be involved in
politics.
The official Myanma News Agency (MNA) said 2,012 NLD
members had left the party and 17 NLD party offices had
been dissolved by their members in the wake of a series of
anti-NLD rallies in Myanmar cities.
It said NLD members had "resigned from the party of their
own volition since they had no desire to carry out political
activities of (the) NLD."
NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi said last month the
resignations and closures of its offices were a result of
coercion by the military government.
The government has put intense pressure on the party since
it promised in August to convene a parliament of
representatives elected at the country's last democratic
election in 1990.
The NLD won that poll by a wide margin but the result was
ignored by the military, who said the country was not yet
ready for democracy.
The military have rounded up and detained hundreds of NLD
members and representatives in recent months to prevent
them from carrying out their threat to convene a parliament.
Some have since been released.
Suu Kyi has said the NLD has 352 local party offices
throughout Myanmar.
