Myanmar to Work for Blue Print for ASEAN Goal

            YANGON (Dec. 14) XINHUA - "Myanmar will work together
            with other members of the Association of Southeast Asian
            Nations (ASEAN) to develop a blue print for the successful
            implementation of the noble goals and tasks set out in the
            ASEAN Vision 2020," Senior-General Than Shwe was
            quoted by an official Information Sheet as saying Monday. 

            Than Shwe, chairman of the Myanmar State Peace and
            Development Council and prime minister, issued an arrival
            statement when touching down in Hanoi Monday to attend
            the Sixth Summit of the ASEAN due to open on Tuesday. 

            Than Shwe warned in his statement that today ASEAN faces
            a number of daunting challenges, saying that, Myanmar,
            however, is confident that with the unity and solidarity of
its
            members, ASEAN will surely be able to overcome them. 

            He expressed the satisfaction that the summit will also
            provide the opportunity for ASEAN nations to discuss
            regional and other issues of mutual interest with the
leaders
            of China, Japan and South Korea, major dialogue partners
            from East Asia. 

            Than Shwe expects to have cordial and meaningful
            deliberations with leaders of other ASEAN member nations
            as well as the three East Asian countries. 

            It is the first time for Than Shwe to attend a formal ASEAN
            summit after Myanmar became a full member of the ASEAN
            in July 1997.
