(1)		Secretary-1 Attends Opening Ceremony of 1998 Health  Research Paper
Reading Session 
		A ceremony to open the 1998 health research paper reading session of the
Ministry of Health was held in the hall of the Institute of Nursing  on 19
December and Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State
Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt  addressed the opening
ceremony. In his address, the Secretary-1 stated that many health research
papers have emerged every year, and this reflects the efforts orientated
towards the national interest of researchers.  Significant reforms have been
carried out in the health sector, and arrangements to improve the standard of
the national health made; as a result, favourable conditions have already been
accomplished to some extent. Priority is to be given to primary public health
care covered by the national health plans; in so doing, public health services
are being provided with added momentum with the aim of covering the entire
nation including border and rural areas and enabling non-governmental
organizations, private associations, cooperatives and joint-ventures to
participate in this task.  Arrangements are being made to upgrade the level of
hospitals and dispensaries, to provide modern medical equipment and medicine,
to hold medical  seminars and to conduct health research with  a view to
improving the standard of medical science.  It is found that the number of
research projects regarding medicine, public health care, traditional
medicine, traditional remedies and health education is on the increase. In
view of the standard and quality of research works, it is found that there
have emerged international-level research works which can  contribute  towards
national interest as well as interest of mankind.  It is also found that
researchers from foreign universities and those from  Myanmar are cooperating
on doing doctorate-level research works; now there are even scholars from
abroad studying for the doctorate.  In addition, Myanmar researchers are
exchanging knowledge and successfully cooperating  on research works with
researchers of ASEAN. It is the fine tradition of ASEAN member nations to
solve health problems together  by exchanging their experience gained from
research works,  and this will significantly contribute to the regional
development.  The health research paper reading session began at the Medical
Research Department on Ziwaka Street in Dagon Township for first day on 19
December.  Deputy Minister for Health and Rector of Institute of Nursing
presided over the morning session.   Resource persons presented eight papers
to the morning session and answered the questions raised.  Professor and Head
of Department Dr. Maung Maung Wint of Institute of Medicine 1 and Professor
and Head of Department Dr. Myint Aung of IM-2 chaired the evening session.
Resource persons presented nine papers to the evening session and answered the
queries.  Eighty-three papers will be presented to the research paper reading
session. It will be held till 23 December.  Seventeen  research posters are
being displayed there.
(2)		Women's and Men's Sepak Takraw Teams Win Silver
		Myanmar women's and men's teams won silver medals each in Sepak Takraw
Circle Game in the XIII Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand on 19 December.  Thai
women's team was first with 3708 points followed by Myanmar women's team with
3374  points and Vietnam women's team third with 2543 points in the final
events.  In the men's final events, Thailand was first with 5134 points,
Myanmar second with 4701  points followed by Malaysia with  3851 points.
Myanmar Sports contingent bagged one gold, six silver and four bronze after
the games.  
(3)		 Kayin New Year Day Observed in Hpa-an
		Kayin New Year Day for the Year 2738 was celebrated on the lawns of the
Kayin State Peace and Development Council in Hpa-an, Kayin State, on 18
December.  First, ceremony to hoist Kayin national flag was held at 6 am,
followed by saluting the State flag and the official concerned extended
greetings and presented prizes to outstanding students. Afterwards,
traditional new harvest festival was held.  Similar Kayin New Year Day
ceremonies were held in other townships and villages in Kayin State on 18
December.
(4)		 Yangon YMCA Hosts Pre-Christmas Dinner
		Yangon Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) held pre-Chritsmas dinner at
Golden Butterfly Hotel in Bahan Township on 19 December, attended by Minister
for Religious Affairs.  Reverend U Saw Mar Gay Gyi blessed the guests and
Archbishop Andrei U Mya Han extended greetings. Next, Minister spoke on the
occasion. Reverend U Myint Lwin and Bishop Mahn San Si Htay blessed those
present.
