U Ko Yu passed away
________________________

U Ko Yu (about 60) has passed away on the 7th December 1998. He was a
lecturer at the Department of Law, Rangoon Arts and Science
University, a well known lawyer and writer since 1960s. 'A lawyer who
became an accused' and 'World's Famous Arguments at the Courts of Law'
are among his books.

He was a member of the Central Executive Committee of the Bar Council,
the lawyer organisation. The 'Bar Council Statement' published before
the 8888 demonstrations in August 1988, of which U Ko Yu was one of
the authors, helped significanty raise the momentum of the
demonstrations for democracy throughout the country.

He was also a founder member of the National League for Democracy and
belonged to its Central Committee. U Ko Yu was both an able political
analyst and an organiser. As a leader of the Pegu Division
Organisation Committee of the NLD he successfully formed the Township
Organisation Committees in the Division. He wrote papers of political
analysis which were put before the meetings of the Central Committee of
the NLD.

He was arrested in the early 1989 for his papers and released just
before the 1990 general election. He subsequently resigned from the
NLD for reasons of health and also because of disagreements on
political and organisational ideas with the then Central Executive
Committee (Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was under house arrest then).

U Ko Yu's contributions to the democratic movement of Burma and to the
organisation of the NLD are of historical significance for our
country.

U Ko Yu's engagement for the rights of his fellow people and the
betterment of their situation goes back to the early 50s. He was a
leading student activist deeply involved in the activities of the
Students United Front, Rangoon University Students Union and the All
Burma Federartion of Student Unions. His 'fighting peacock' spirit
will remain alive among the new generations - dispassionate analyses
and action for the cause of the Burmese peoples.
