Myanmar arrests opposition members for distributing leaflets

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) =97 Myanmar has arrested at least three members =
of the country's main opposition group for distributing anti-government =
leaflets, a state-owned newspaper reported Sunday.=20

The New Light of Myanmar said the arrests occurred Dec. 22 after an =
investigation into the distribution of pamphlets in public places in the =
capital of Yangon earlier in the month.=20

The newspaper said the pamphlets were traced to Yay town, 145 miles =
southeast of Yangon. Officials arrested town official Khin Soe, who had =
pamphlets and other anti-government documents in his possession.=20

He is a member of the main legal opposition force operating in Myanmar, =
the National League for Democracy, which faces severe repression from =
the military government.=20

The paper reported that Khin Soe and two other league members, Zaw Win =
and Win Kywe, also of Yay township, established contact with an =
anti-government exile group, People's Defense Force, and received =
training on political resistance, sabotage and propaganda methods.=20

The report said the three were also accused of sending fabricated =
reports to Radio Free Asia, a U.S. government-funded broadcaster =
established to promote democracy.=20

The report did not mention the total number of arrests, nor did it give =
the text of the pamphlets.
