Burma government arrests opposers

The authorities in Burma say they have arrested a number of people,
including eleven members of the National League for Democracy, for
distributing leaflets against the government.

The arrests were made last month, but only announced by the state-run media
on Sunday.

On Saturday, the All-Burma Federation of Student Unions said
two-hundred-and-seventy students had been given prison terms ranging from
seven to fifty-two years in secret trials.

The union said the students had supported calls for the convening of the
parliament elected in nineteen-ninety but prevented by the military from
meeting.
