Myanmar Military Seizes Drugs

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) - Myanmar's military has seized half a million
amphetamines and 116 pounds of heroin in a town near the border with
Thailand, the government said Sunday.

Acting on a tip, soldiers and narcotics police raided a house and arrested
five people in Tachilek in northeastern Shan State. Inside, they found the
pills and the heroin, which was broken down into 145 blocks.

The town straddles the border with Thailand and has long been known as a key
smuggling route for drugs into Thailand and then on to Western nations.

Myanmar, also known as Burma, is the world's largest producer of opium, the
raw material for heroin, and the source of many of the amphetamines flooding
into Thailand.
