Wa arrest SPDC soldier for destroying forest
Taunggyi, January 26.
On December 31, 1998, an SPDC soldier was arrested by the Wa cease-fire group
for cutting down trees and held for 3 days.
While a platoon of  SPDC troops from Pang Dao camp, LIB no. 240 HoPang,
northern Shan State, were cutting wood in Par Liang forest  for their camp, 6
armed soldiers from the Wa cease-fire group came and seized one of them, Aung
Kyaw Moe. 
The culprit was released after 3 days with a stern warning not to destroy the
environment by U Aik Rone, the Wa "Nam Dip" administrative officer.

Murder of young couple in SPDC security area in Lashio
Taunggyi, January 27.
On the morning of January 16, 1999, a young woman was killed and her boyfriend
fatally wounded in Lashio, Northern Shan State, under the noses of local SPDC
security.
Ma Thazin Hla, aged 22, was killed by a heavy blow on the head, and her
boyfriend Maung Zay Yar Tun, 20, was also struck on the head and in the
stomach. He died the following day in Lashio Hospital.
The killing occurred beside the "Mya Kan Tha" pond in Lashio, an area which is
closely guarded by SPDC soldiers as the microwave communication department is
near by. The pond is also used by the military  for fish culture.

SPDC soldier injured while moonlighting for gold 
Taunggyi, January 28.
On January 18, 1999, an SPDC officer from the 83 Artillery Unit was injured
while digging for gold at a gold mine 30 km from Mandalay.
Sgt. Zaw Win was injured when the gold mine at Thabeikgyin collapsed. He was
then sent to the local hospital.
Sgt. Zaw Win was supposed to be responsible for recruitment, but had been
working in the goldmine to supplement his meagre income and rations, which
were
insufficient for his family.

Shan cease-fire group SSA continues to rehabilitate addicts despite SPDC
closure of rehabilitation camps
Taunggyi, January 27.
During January 1999, the SSA cease-fire group has successfully
rehabilitated 45
drug addicts in Namkham, northern Shan State, despite the closure by the SPDC
of the SSA rehabilitation centres in Muse and Namkham in Auguast 1998.
The SSA are now using the technique of keeping the addicts at home and using
their families to help in the rehabilitation process.

SPDC soldiers kill each other after drinking bout
Taunggyi, January 25.
On January 13, 1999, an SPDC sergeant  of LIB 239 at KungLong, Northern Shan
State, shot dead one of his soldiers for drinking.
Sergeant Khin Maung Win of LIB (239) the head of the security platoon of
NamSang hydroelectric plant tried to detain  one of his drunken soldiers
called
Parn Thu. When the soldier resisted with a knife, the sergeant shot him with
BA-94 rifle. The injured soldier died on the way to Ho Pang hospital.
A similar incident occurred in LIB 41 Lashio, Northern Shan State, on January
18 1999. A drunken soldier struck his sergeant with an ax afer a drunken
quarrel. The sergeant was found dead the next morning.
