(1)		Vice-Chairman of State Peace and Development Council General 				Maung
Aye Receives Adviser to Minister of Defence of Thailand
		Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council General Maung Aye
received Adviser to Thai Minister of Defence General Yoodhana Yampundhu and
party who called at Zeyathiri Beikman( Conference Hall)  on Konmyintha on 1
February.
(2)		Secretary-1 Receives UNESCO Assistant Director-General
		Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt
received UNESCO Assistant Director-General Mr. Daniel Janicot who called at
Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence  on 1 February.
(3)		Diplomats on Tour to Observe Development Projects
		The ambassadors, charges d'affaires ai and their wives of foreign embassies
and party, headed by Minister for Foreign Affairs and wife, left Yangon by air
for Mandalay on 29 January on a tour to observe regional development projects.
>From Mandalay, they proceeded to Thaphanseik Dam in Kyunhla Township by
helicopter. They toured the project site in cars  before going on to
Sinphyuyshin Bridge (Chindwin). At the project site, Secretary of Sagaing
Division Peace and Development Council and Project Superintending Engineer
hosted lunch in their honour. They arrived back in Mandalay at 4:15 pm and
visited Mandalay Hill. Commander  of the Central Command and wife hosted
dinner in their honour at Nanmyo Guest House. On 30 January, they visited
Myanansankyaw Shwenandaw (Golden Palace) in Mandalay, Bagan NyaungU, Anawrahta
Bridge (Chauk) Project and Mone Creek Dam. They flew back to Bagan NyaungU by
helicopter and there, they visited the Lacquerware Institute and Bagan
Archaeological Museum. Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development

Council and wife hosted dinner in their honour at Bagan Hotel. On 1 February
they visited Paunglaung Multi-Purpose Dam Project, South Nawin Dam, Nawadei
Ayeyawady River Bridge at Pyay, and Bo Myat Tun Bridge (Nyaungdon), and
observed the project for reclamation of the wetlands in Zibyukyun area. They
arrived back in Yangon on 1 February.
(4)		Minister Meets UNESCO Assistant Director-General
		Chairman of Myanmar -UNESCO National Commission Minister for Education U
Than Aung met UNESCO Assistant Director-General Mr. Daniel Janicot who called
at International Business Centre of Myanma Timber Enterprise on 1 February.
They discussed matters related to bilateral cooperation.
(5)		119.2 Kilos of Ephedrine Power Seized
		Members of local intelligence unit, acting on information, searched the
house of Aung Sein, Chanayethazan Township, Mandalay and arrested him with 23
packets of ephedrine powder weighing 119.2 kilos to be used in making
stimulants. Upon further information, they arrested two brothers Kyaw Nyein
and Kyaw Aye, involved in drug trafficking. On investigation, it was learnt
that the powder was purchased from India and brought to Mandalay via Tamu by
various ways and means. Action is being taken against the three according to
law.
(6)		National Convention Convening Commission Meets
		National Convention Convening Commission held a meeting at the meeting hall
of NCCC office on 1 February. National Convention Convening Work Committee and
National  Convention Convening Management Committee reported on the National
Convention matters. Members of the National Convention Convening Commission
took part in the discussions. 
U OHN MYINT PARDONED, RELEASED FROM JAIL
		The Government of Myanmar announced today that, out of consideration of his
age and respect for his family, it had granted a pardon to U Ohn Myint and
released him from prison.
		U Ohn Myint, 81, was sentenced on 28 April 1998 to seven years' imprisonment
under Section  5 (E) of the Emergency Provision Act, after being found guilty
of working with underground organizations and attempting to create
misunderstandings between  the Government and ethnic groups. U Ohn Myint is a
member of the National League for Democracy.
		He was given a pardon and released on January 20, 1999.
