(1)	Central Institute of Civil Service (Upper Myanmar) Opened in PyinOoLwin
	Township

 	The Central Institute of Civil Service (Upper Myanmar) was opened at Yadana
Hall of the Institute in PyinOoLwin Township, Mandalay Division, on 7
February, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of
the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. The institute on
1,061 acres is situated on Mandalay-PyinOoLWin Road. The new CICS was opened
for the State Service Personnel totalling one million out of the total
population of 47 million to organize as a brilliant national force.

(2)		Cruise-liner MS Berlin Arrives at Nanthida Jetty

 	Cruise-liner MS Berlin of Germany with 276 tourists on board arrived on 8
February at Nanthida Jetty, in Yangon, under arrangement of Myanma Tourism
Service of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism and Myanmar Voyages Co Ltd. The
tourists will visit downtown Yangon, Thanlyin, Bago and Bagan in two days.
Cultural variety dances were presented by Myanma Tourism Service in the
evening on board the liner.

(3)		Deputy Director of Ministry of International Affairs and Trade Calls on
Mayor

		Eleven member youths delegation led by Deputy Director of Ministry of
International Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Korea Mr. Ham Jeong-Han,
currently in Yangon, under the programme to exchange youths between ASEAN
countries and the Republic of Korea, called on Secretary of Union Solidarity
and Development Association Mayor U Ko Lay at USDA Headquarters on 8 February.
Mayor U Ko Lay hosted dinner in honour of the delegation at Royal Yangon City
Hotel.

 (4)		Ether Factory Seized in Hsenwi

 Acting on information, a Tatmadaw (Military) column of North-East Command
seized an ether factory near Namsho Creek, seven miles south-east of Hsenwi
Township, Shan State, on 27 January 1999. The factory manufactured ether to be
used in production of narcotic drugs.

	Members of the local battalion column, Defence Services Intelligence Unit and
Anti-drug Squad, operated at Namsho Creek region on 27 January, and seized
three huts and the following paraphernalia used in ether production were

seized:
	- 	36 drums of spirit 1,656 gallons	
	- 	21 containers of hydrochloric acid 105 gallons	
	- 	three containers of sulphuric acid 9 gallons	
	- 	one bag of soda powder weighing 25 kilos, 50 gallons of kerosene/diesel,

		retorts, 35 kerosene stoves, 36 saucepans used in refining opium and a lot
		of paraphernalia.
 
	The Tatmadaw (Military) has destroyed two heroin refineries, one ether
factory and two factories which produced stimulant tablets from 1 January 1999
till today.
