A senior military leader in Burma has called for all opponents of the
regime to be crushed.

General Than Shwe's remarks have been made in a speech to mark a holiday
dedicated to national unity.

As the official ceremony presided over by General Than Shwe took place,
opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi was handing out free rice to hundreds of
the capital's poor and needy.

They had flocked to her party's headquarters.

While the military called on the people to crush opponents to its rule from
both inside and outside the country, Aung San Suu Kyi refrained from making
a public address.

In recent months, the regime has intensified its crackdown on the opposition.

Hundreds of party members remain detained in government guest houses.

Aung San Suu Kyi's party won four out of every five seats in the 1990
election, but the military has steadfastly refused to hand over power.
