France to boycott Burma drugs conference

France has said it will not attend an Interpol conference later this month
in Burma on heroin production and trafficking.

The United States and several other European countries have already
announced their intention to boycott the gathering.

In announcing France's decision, the Foreign Minister, Hubert Vedrine said
his country would not take part on account of the political situation in
Burma.

The Burmese authorities are frequently criticised for their human rights
record.
