The Thai army chief, Surayuth Chulanont, is in Burma for
a three-day visit aimed at easing tensions following a
             series of border clashes.

He said his duty was to promote understanding between
the militaries of the two nations.

At least seven people have been killed in a series of
clashes between the Thai navy and Burmese vessels off
             a disputed border region.

The Burmese foreign minister, Win Aung, is scheduled
to arrive in Thailand on Friday and is expected to visit the
southern Thai province of Ranong, where the clashes
             have taken place.
