We write to express our deep concern for the above 26 Burmese perons who =
are being held at the Sothem Detention Center. They are among the group =
of 32 Burmese who were arrested when peacefully protesting before the =
Burmese Embassy in December 1998 Six of those arrested have since been =
released,probably aided by the efforts of UNHCR.
As you are aware among the men still in detention, there are those who =
are recognized as "persons of concern" those whose cases are pending =
with the UNHCR and those who have no status. We request you to do all =
that is possible to speed up the process to recognize those who yet have =
no status as "persons of concern"so that they may come under the =
umbrella of your protection and thus be safe the=20
potential hoaxer of deportation.
We also urge that you use whatever leverage possible with the Thai =
government (including that of your office in New York and Geneva) to =
secure the immediate release of these men who were well within their =
constitutional rights while protesting. We also request that you ensure =
that the Thai police authorities do not subject the men to any ill- =
treatment while in detention.
Those of us activists in japan and around the world are doing what we =
can through various channels to secure the release of the Burmese =
detainees by reminding the Thai government of its commitment to the =
Universal Declaration of Human Right , in particular Article9:"No one =
shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile"
Thank-you for all that you do for the cause to help Burmese refugees.

democracy to their homeland Burma (Myanmar) and were peacefully =
protesting before their embassy when arrested. We urge that your offices =
use its powers to ensure the immediate release of these men who were =
well within their constitutional rights while protesting .We also =
request you to ensure that the Thai police authorities do not subject =
the men to ill-treatment while in detention.
We remind the Thai government of its commitment to the Universal =
Declaration of Human Rights, in particular Article 9:"No one shall be =
subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile"
We appeal to the Thai sense of compassion and concern towards its =
fellowmen in understanding the situation of those Burmese in Thailand =
who are forced into exile due to the harsh rule of the military =
government .Thailand has been a safe haven for thousands of Burmese =
refugees and we encourage you to extend that same goodwill to the =
Burmese activists in Thailand.
