Rangoon: The Burmese authorities sent millions of dollars worth of seized
drugs up in smoke on Thursday as it took another swipe at the West for
doubting its sincerity in battling opium production.

The ceremony, attended by junta First Secretary Khin Nyunt, saw the
burning of thousands of kilograms of drugs, including raw opium,
processed heroin, stimulants and marijuana.

It was intended as visual display of the junta's anti-drugs effort on the
final day of Interpol's international heroin conference here. In total,
4,000 kg of opium were destroyed, along with 431 kg of heroin.

Steamrollers were used to crush bottles of cough syrup and liquid opium.
Piles of heroin, stimulants and other narcotics were placed on iron table
before Interpol head of criminal intelligence Paul Higdon lit them,
sending flames and smoke high into the air. (AFP)
