Washington -- The Department of State has announced reward
offers of up to
$2 million for information leading to the arrest or conviction
of five major drug
traffickers in Burma and Thailand.
In a notice released June 3, the Office of the Spokesman said:
"The rewards are
being offered as part of the Counternarcotics Rewards Program
established by
Congress in 1986 as a tool to assist the U.S. Government in
identifying and
bringing to justice the major narcotics traffickers."

NOTICE TO THE PRESS
NEW TARGETS FOR THE COUNTERNARCOTICS REWARDS
PROGRAM
The Department of State is pleased to announce today reward
offers of up to
$2 million for information leading to the arrest or conviction
of five major drug
traffickers listed below.
The rewards are being offered as part of the Counternarcotics
Rewards
Program established by Congress in 1986 as a tool to assist
the U.S.
Government in identifying and bringing to justice the major
narcotics traffickers.
The Department of State's Bureau for International Narcotics
and Law
Enforcement Affairs manages the Counternarcotics Rewards
Program in close
coordination with the Department of Justice, the Drug
Enforcement
Administration (DEA), Federal Bureau of investigation (FBI),
and other U.S.
agencies.
Proposals to pay rewards are approved by the Department of
State after a
careful review process by an interagency committee, which
makes a
recommendation to the Secretary of State. The Attorney General
must concur
with the Secretary of State's proposal to pay a reward in each
case.
In the United States, information regarding the targeted drug
traffickers can be
provided directly to local offices of the DEA or FBI.
Overseas, individuals with
information on these traffickers should contact the nearest
U.S. Embassy or
Consulate.
The U.S. Government will ensure complete confidentiality to
individuals who
provide information on major narcotics traffickers.
The drug traffickers for whom rewards are now being offered are:
BURMA
Chang Chi-Fu -- aka: Khun Sa
Chang Ping-Yun -- aka: Khun Saeng
Wei Hsueh-Kang -- aka: Prasit Chivinnitipanya
Yang Wan-Hsuan -- aka: Lao Tai
THAILAND
Liu Szu-Po -- aka: Kamrat Namsuwakhon, Lamdap Namsuwakhon
