Foreign prostitutes involved

AN estimated 18,000 prostitutes from neighbouring countries are believed to be
involved in the country's flesh trade, Deputy Labour Minister Paveena
Hongsakul
said yesterday.

The number is not derived from official government statistics but from
non-governmental organisations, Paveena added.
Most foreign prostitutes come from Burma, Laos, Vietnam and Southern China.
''There are both women who were forced into the sex trade and those who
voluntarily sell their bodies. Some use the country as a step to a third
country such as Malaysia. We have tried to repatriate them, but many come
back,''
she said.

About 70 per cent of street beggars arrested are also Burmese, Cambodian or
Lao, and some of these are children, she said, many duped by job-placement
agencies.

More than 1,800 foreign street beggars were arrested and repatriated last
year,
she said, adding that she would call a meeting of concerned officials to
discuss the problem on March 15 to propose solutions to Asean meetings.
