(1)		International Women's Day Observed

		The International Women's Day was observed at the International Business
Centre on  8 March. The world's nations observe the International  Women's Day
on 8 March every year, Myanmar started to observe the day in 1997. Myanmar
delegation had attented to the  Beijing Women's Conference in September 1995
and Myanmar implemented the action plans laid down by the Beijing Conference.
To be able to successfully implement the action plans laid down by the Beijing
Conference, the Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs was formed with
the officials of the government, social welfare associations and women's
organizations on 3 July 1996.
		In honour of the day on which the Myanmar National Committee for Women's
Affairs was formed, 3 July is observed as Myanmar Women's Day every year. The
activities carried out by the Committee such as reduction of the number of
illiterate women, poverty, women's health improvement,domestic science,
prevention of violence  against women, rehabilitation and all-round
development of women.
		Myanmar hosted the Regional Consultation on Violence against Women (VAW) and
the Role of Health Sector with the sponsorship of the Myanmar National
Committee for Women's Affairs in cooperation with the World Health
Organization in January 1999. 

(2)		Minister Meets Director-General of Trade and Economic Cooperation Bureau
of China

		Minister for Commerce met 14-member delegation led by Director-General of
Trade and Economic Cooperation Bureau between Yunan Province, China and
borders countries Mr. Zhang Ruikun, together with Economic and Commercial
Counsellor of China Mr. Lin Jian, who called at his office on 8 March. 

(3)		Malaysian Delegation Members and UMCCI Hold Meeting 
		A 22-member Malaysian entrepreneur delegation led by Chairman of Sibu
Chamber of Importers, Exporters and Wholesalers Mr. Wong Do Yon of Sarawak
Province of Malaysia arrived at Union of Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and
Industry Office on Merchant Street on 8 March. Chairman of UMCCI explained the
situation of UMCCI, investment, economic and trading opportunities. 

(4)		New Modern Fish Wholesale Centre to be Built in Myeik
		A meeting to coordinate building of an international level fish wholesale
centre in Myeik, Taninthayi Division, was held in a meeting hall of the
Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries on 8 March. The modern centre will be
built on a 150 acre plot. The first phase includes construction  of a jetty,
the market building and the office building. The entire project will be
implemented with a capital of over US $ 100 million. The Office Equipment
Machinery Supplies & Services Co. Ltd will build the market with the aim of
ensuring Myanmar's sea fish and prawns market to be in the hands of national
people.


(5)		Total Myanmar Exploration and Production Opens New Office
		Total Myanmar Exploration and Production, which is conduction joint venture
with the Ministry of Energy, opened its new office near Tooth Relic Pagoda in
Mayangon, in Yangon on 8 March. The company signed production sharing contract
with Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise in 1992 to find oil and gas at blocks M-5
and M-6 off Myanmar coast. The Yadana Project was successfully completed at
present. The company will also act as the main operator for 30 years.

(6)		Eco Institute Assistance to Trainees of Doctorate Course
		The Research Paper Reading Session of Yangon Institute of Economics was held
in conjunction with the presentation of cash assistance to trainees of
doctorate course at the institute on 8 March. Present on the occasion were the
Rector, the Pro-Rector, professors, lecturers, teachers and registrars. The
resource persons presented six papers to the meeting.
