Min Ko Naing or "Conqueror of Kings," is the nom de guerre of one of the =
most prominent public figures in Burma's struggle for democracy and =
human rights. During the 1988 pro-democracy uprising, Min Ko Naing =
opened the eyes of the Burmese people to the injustice and suffering =
that was being unleashed upon them. He led the All Burma Federations of =
Student Unions (ABFSU), the most distinguished student body in 1988 =
uprising. After the violent crackdown of the uprising, he remained =
inside Burma while leading the ABSFU. He was arrested on March 23, 1989 =
during his hide and sentenced to 20 years in prison. He has being =

isolated in a small cell and tortured since he was arrested. According =
to the reports from inside Burma, he is suffering from a gastric ulcer. =
Even though he is confined in harsh prison situations, his spirit of =
freedom struggle remains strong. It is believed that Min Ko Naing has =
been transferred from Insein Prison, Rangoon to Sittwe Prison in Arakan =
State.
