crimes as well ??

   Actual 'civilian' crime does not occur in Rangoon because of the
excessive military presence. Most people are easily imprisoned or
killed. But these numbers will Never reflect the thefts and Rapes etc.
outside the city comitted UN-Offically by the tatmadaw people and the
MI.



1,432 Major Crime Cases Reported in Myanmar in 1998

               YANGON (March 20) XINHUA - A total of 1,432
               cases of major crimes such as murder, robbery,
               rape and burglary occurred in Myanmar in 1998,
               down 79.35 percent as compared with 1989 when it
               were 6,937, according to a latest official statistics. 

               The number of such crime cases was 2,146 in 1997
               and 3,070 in 1996. 

               179 cases took place in Yangon division in 1998,
               while 196 registered in 1997 and 398 in 1996 in the
               division. 

               The ten major offenses in the country also include
               dacoity, robbery, kidnapping, theft of cattle, high
               treason, illegal possession of arms and unlawful
               association. 

               In 1998, murder cases declined to 965 from 1,506
               in 1996, and dacoity, rape and theft cases to 18,
               223 and 6,983 from 51, 770 and 15,374
               respectively, the statistics showed. 

               Altogether 13,487 cases of crime occurred in
               Myanmar in 1998, dropping by 9.2 percent and 34.6
               percent as compared with that in 1997 and 1996
               respectively. 

               Crime ratio in the country was only 17.3 percent per
               100,000 persons in 1998. 

               Myanmar is known as having very few crime cases
               as compared with other parts of the world,
               especially other Asian and Southeast Asian
               countries. 

               The capital of Yangon is known as one of the best
               40 Asian cities, standing at the 7th position of the

               least occurrence rate of crime.
