Opposition Leader Never Got Last Chance to See Dying Husband

(Bangkok, Thailand-AP) -- He had hoped to see his wife
one
last time before he died. But for Michael Aris, it wasn't
to be.

Aris was married to Aung San Suu Kyi (ahng sahn soo
chee), a Nobel peace laureate and opposition leader in
               Myanmar (mee-an-MAWR'). But ignoring international
pressure, the military rulers of the country once known
as
Burma refused to give him a visa.

It's now too late for Aris. Diplomatic sources say he
died
today in a British hospital from prostate cancer that
spread to
               his spine and lungs.

Myanmar officials told Suu Kyi to leave if she wanted to
see
the 53-year-old British academic but she feared they
               wouldn't let her back in.
