Myanmar FM Leaves for Visit to South Korea

               YANGON (May 28) XINHUA - Myanmar Foreign Minister U Win
Aung left here
               Friday for Seoul to pay an official visit to South Korea,
aimed at strengthening ties
               between the two countries. 

               Invited by South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs and
Trade Hong Soon Young, U
               Win Aung is the first Myanmar foreign minister to visit
South Korea since November
               1995 when former Myanmar Foreign Minister U Ohn Gyaw
toured that country. 

               According to state-run Radio Myanmar Friday night, U Win
Aung will proceed to
               Japan after his visit to South Korea to attend in Tokyo
the 5th International
               Conference on the Future of Asia. 

               Despite few mutual visits at high level, Myanmar and
South Korea have in the past
               few years maintained their economic links with continuous
investment from the
               South Korean private sector. 

               According to official statistics, South Korea's
investment in Myanmar amounted to
               99.33 million dollars in 20 projects at the end of 1998.
