PRESS RELEASE (r)

Rhetorical remarks by the SPDC with reference to Taiwan's Declaration of
its Sovereignty

17th July 1999
By Julien Moe

There is no doubt about the Burmese military group's loyalty to PRC as it
has been a major supporter of the unpopular regime by means of technical
assistance, interest-free loans and intelligence and air force trainings.
Besides, Burma has no formal relations with Taiwan. No wonder Burma has no
control over its crying out loud in standing with PRC and no need to
restrain itself from reiterating its support and openly but indirectly
condemning Taiwan's annunciation of its sovereignty. Yet Burma's such moves
are against the national interest of the United States and such overt
comments will be well recorded and used in prescribing the U.S. policy
toward Burma. The U.S. support for Taiwan's sovereignty has been
unequivocal as the United States has warned China not to have any aggressive
military behaviour against Taiwan If China does, China will have to face
consequences. The military presence of the Unted States in the Pacific is
widespread and increasing especially in this decade. Burma that has been
violating human rights against its own people born and raised in it will
have to suffer the consequences sooner or later. The people of the Shan
State have got their own rights and freedom to live freely in their own
state without needing to be disturbed. So have the Karens and the Chins. If
a government tortures, limits the freedom of its own people, disregards the
inborn human rights of its indigenous people, such a government will not
procrastinate to support a similar regime trying to consolidate its power
within the region by force. History is history but in retrospect states and
satellite countries did break away and declared independence if it was the
will of the people. Taiwan has its right to be independent and be its free
nation-state and the United States will not play dumb in this precarious
scenario that could quite become an international incident. No wonder
ASEAN has no say in it yet. It seems to be cautious after several
incorrigible mistakes about admitting Burma into the association. The actual
reason why Burma is right behind China is , as the saying goes, "You don't
bite the hand that feeds you". Consequences that will follow are

unimaginable too.
