Burmese Students Conference in Canada successfully finished

Two days conference of Burmese students and democratic forces in Canada has
been successfully finished in Vancouver, BC with the aims of consolidating
students and democratic forces in Canada, enhancing historically important
role of Burmese students and adopting principles and working plans.

In the two-day conference of July 3rd and 4th, more than 50 representatives
of Burmese students and activists residing in different parts of the country
attended the conference. And those representatives discussed about working
plans for democracy movement in Burma and adopted the consolidated
guidelines of principle, aim and objective for the further activities in
Canada.  To the conference, representatives of Canadian NGOs working for
Burma and other Burmese organizations including Burmese ethnic organizations
attended the conference as observers.  

In the first day of conference, Burmese Students Democratic Organization
(BSDO) was overwhelmingly voted to maintain as the national organization?s
name, which was named in the first conference held in Toronto in 1997 and
also decided to continuously adhere the nonviolence method for
democratization in Burma.

In the second day of conference, the second term of central committee was
elected and assigned to facilitate for organization?s adopted working plans.
As a near future plan, the formation of  ?Supporting Committee for 9999
Action in Burma? was strongly reaffirmed in the conference and willingly
prepared to collaborate with other non-governmental organizations, related
community and pressure groups, as well as interested individuals in Canada.
They have also decided to encourage the Canadian federal and provincial
governments and relevant agencies to take action on the following subjects
regarding Burma. 
1) To recognize the Committee for Representing People Parliament (CRPP) as
legitimate body in Burma; 
2) To impose effective economic sanction against Burmese regime; 
3) To give further humanitarian assistant to Burmese refugees on Burma?s
neighboring borders, and 
4) To lobby Burma issue in order to put a motion on UN Security Council as
being a member of the council.
