off-roaders

Red Wa rebels have offered their clients in Thailand
5.7 million methamphetamine pills in exchange for 40
off-road vehicles, according to the chief of the police
anti-car theft centre.
In an order placed by the Red Wa, who are active in the
production of the drug, the Toyota Tiger is specified as
the off-roader of choice, said Pol Maj-Gen Pittaya
Charoenpanit.
Details of the order were reported by Pol Lt-Gen Aram
Chanpen, chief of Region 5, in a classified letter to Pol
Gen Pracha Promnok, the national police chief.
According to the report, the Red Wa have produced 5.7
million pills destined for drug rings but instead of
taking cash, they want 40 off-roaders in showroom
condition.
The drugs, it said, are to be smuggled in through Mae
Hong Son, Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai.
Pol Gen Pracha has ordered the Metropolitan Police to
step up operations against car theft, with stringent
examinations of registration seals and insurance
certificate at checkpoints.
City police are to co-ordinate with highways police and
regional police in setting up more checkpoints.
From January to June, 607 vehicles were reported
stolen, down from 804 in the corresponding period of
last year.
Chiang Rai police reported nine cases this year, and
only one of the stolen vehicles was recovered.
