SPDC's Martyr's Day

SPDC's 52nd Martyr's Day, 19-7-99

U Win Sein, the Cultural minister was the most senior official who paid
tribute to Bogyoke Aung San and national heroes on 52nd Martyr's Day in
Rangoon. U Win Sein was accompanied by Chief Justice U Aung Toe,
Attorney-General U Tha Tun, and Auditor-General Brig-Gen Tin Aye. The
bouquet said "U Win Sein, on behalf of Senior General Than Shwe".

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was the first persons among the relatives of the
national heroes. She was shown on TV-Myanmar in black longyi without any
flowers on her head. Intelligent Colonel Than Tun escorted her. After
laying a basket of flowers Daw Suu prostrated three times in front of her
father's mausoleum. On behalf of Aung San Oo and his wife, U Nan New and
family paid tribute. After the relatives, USDA laid the bouquet before
Rangoon-based diplomats.

On the same morning, Khin Nyunt was enjoying entertainment and receiving
salutations. He attended the opening ceremony of three-story school
building at the training school of University of Education. All schoolboys,
schoolgirls and teachers greeted him with folded hands. He watched dances,
music and martial art presented by schoolchildren. In his speech he said it
was an auspicious day in the history of education.

It is believed that SPDC and Khin Nyunt deliberately arranged such an
opening ceremony on Martyr's Day, which is national gazetted holiday. The
schools have to be closed. The entire people have to mourn. All programs
from radio and TV have to highlight the Martyr's Day. There has no writing
on Martyrs at all in the state-run dailies. However, in the whole day,
TV-Myanmar telecast only a song sang by Tin Tin Mya. Although nothing was
watched relating to Martyr's Day from TV-Myanmar till 8 p.m. on 19-7-99,
the SPDC announced song contest for upcoming Armed Forces Day, which will
come after 9 months later. Today Khin Nyunt said it was an auspicious day.
