FW: IUF-A/P resolution

Free Burma Coalition, Australia
IUF Asia/Pacific Regional Committee

RESOLUTION:

Burma

The 1999 IUF Asia/Pacific Regional Committee Meeting, held in Tokyo on
27-28 June 1999:

- WELCOMES the recent resolution on Burma at the June 1999 ILO
Conference in which the ILO is to refuse Burma all technical assistance
and is to ban representatives of the Burmese regime from attending ILO
meetings because of the systematic use of forced labour by the military
junta;

- NOTES WITH GRAVE CONCERN that it is two years since the arrest of
Federation of Trade Unions - Burma (FTUB) Central Executive Committee
members U Khin Kyaw and U Myo Aung Thant and members of their families
on June 13, 1997;

- SIMILARLY NOTES that U Khin Kyaw remains incarcerated without trial,
that U Myo Aung Thant was given a sentence of life imprisonment in a
trial that was not open to the public, and that both their wives are
being detained in an unknown location;

- NOTES ALSO that U Khin Kyaw and U Myo Aung Thant were accused of
"performing terrorist activities" through the media controlled by the
SLORC military regime but were denied any legal counsel in their defence
of these false accusations;

- NOTES WITH PROFOUND ADMIRATION that U Khin Kyaw and U Myo Aung Thant
were simply undertaking basic education and organising activities for
workers in Burma under a regime which wrongfully refuses to allow
workers any rights to organise or to collective bargaining;

- CONDEMNS this outrageous violation of basic human rights by the SLORC
- now SPDC - military regime in Burma;

- DEMANDS the SPDC regime to immediately and unconditionally release U
Myo Aung Thant and U Khin Kyaw and their wives;

- DEMANDS the SPDC to release all political prisoners in Burma without
condition; and

- DEMANDS the SPDC to recognise the results of the 1990 elections, and
to allow the democratically elected representatives to convene a
parliament without any further delay.

end.
