Tribesman's slaying linked to drugs row

A Muser tribesman, a former member of the Shan State Army, has been killed
and mutilated by suspected members of a border drug gang.

The victim, identified only as Jarphor, 28, was killed last Thursday at Ban
Aeko, tambon Tham Lod in Phang Mapha district, a border official said. He
was stabbed several times and his left hand cut off.

A source at the 7th Infantry Regiment's task force believed the killing was
motivated by a drug trade conflict. Meanwhile, authorities believe Burmese
forces might be connected with a July 23 raid on a Thai village, in which
four Karen refugees were abducted.

The intruders also made off with 35,000 baht worth of valuables and cash
from Ban Mai Sapae, Muang district, Mae Hong Son. They abducted a Burmese
student, two former Karen troopers and a priest.
