Yangon Division Completes Monsoon Paddy Ploughing Season for 1999-2000
A ceremony to mark the completion of monsoon paddy ploughing season
in Yangon Division for 1999-2000 was held in conjunction with paddy
transplanting competition and presenting of prizes for crop cultivation and
production on 30 July at Sitpinkwin village, Thanlyin Township, Yangon West
District in the Division. Yangon Division exceeded its monsoon paddy
cultivation target by putting 1.135 million acres under monsoon paddy in the
previous season; it is increasing its summer paddy cultivation year after
year. Efforts are made to put all cultivable land under crops and to raise
the per acre yield to enhance the Division's crop production. This year also
the Division exceeded its target again by completing monsoon paddy and to
raise the per acre yield to enhance the Division's crop production. This year
also the Division exceeded its target again by completing monsoon paddy
cultivation on 1.17 million acres at the end of the ploughing season.
Increase in paddy cultivation was due to the efforts in utilizing all
cultivable land in the region. Majority of farmers in the nation are putting
a total of 22 million acres under crops on a manageable scale yearly;
though the nation has another 22 millions acres of virgin, vacant and fallow
lands, the government is putting emphasis in building new dams and
pumped-water stations, distributing pumps, power-tillers and other farm
machines, fertilizers, pesticides and quality strains and disseminating
advanced techniques to develop the agricultural sector and the farmers'
social lives.
