Memorial Service will commemorate Burmese deaths

A service of commemoration in Edmonton on August 8 will provide an
opportunity for people to remember and appreciate the lives of thousands
of people who were murdered by the military dictatorship in Burma on
August 8, 1988.

The massacre in 1988 is one of the most horrific actions of a military
dictatorship which controls Burma and continues to deny its people the
democratically elected government is chose in free elections.

The Edmonton memorial service is one of many being held around the world
on August 8. Speaking at the service will be Dr. Alice Khin, who has
served a personal physician to Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu
Kyi, the leader of the democracy movement in Burma.

Everyone is welcome to attend and light a commemorative candle. The
service will take place at 2:00 pm on Sunday, August 8. It will be on
the lawn of Knox Metropolitan United Church at 109 Street and 83 Avenue.

Information about the Edmonton action being planned as part of worldwide
9999 events in support of human rights and democracy in Burma will be
available at the memorial service.
