(1) Opening Ceremony of Tile Factory in Thayawady 

    A ceremony to open the tile factory of Myanma Ceramics Industries
under the Ministry of Industry-1 was held in the compound of Thayawady
Ceramics Factory, Bago Division, on 3 August. The tile factory occupies
two-acre plot in the compound of the factory. Machinery was imported
from Nassetti SpA Company of Italy, and GPN of Pannacci Ubaldo Company
of Italy undertook the test-run of the factory. The test-run began in
July 1999; the factory produces wall tiles and floor tiles with the
sizes of six square inches, eight square inches and 12 square inches;
the annual production is 1,000 square metres; and the annual production
of tiles of eight square inches is eight million slabs. 

(2) Seminar on Development of Industries of Industrial Zones Continues

    The seminar on development of industries of the industrial zones
sponsored by Myanma Industrial Development Committee(MIDC) continued
for the second day on 3 August at the Ministry of Industry-2. Patron of
MIDC, Chairman of MIDC, Chairman of Myanma Industrial Development Work
Committee, ministers, deputy ministers, officials of government
departments, representatives of 18 industrial zones, entrepreneurs and
guests. In the morning session, Deputy Director of Directorate of
Investment and Companies Administration gave talks on foreign and local
investment and General Manager of Myanma Industrial Development Bank on
disbursement of loans to industries. Officials replied to queries
raised by representatives of industrial zones. In the afternoon
session, representatives of Meiktila, Mandalay, Yenangyoung, Yangon
(West), Bago, Taunggyi, Pakokku, Pyay and Pathein industrial zones and
Dagon Industrial Zone-2 presented accomplishments and requirements
sector wise.  Officials looked into the requirements and the seminar
continues on 4 August.

(3) UC Invites Applications for 1999-2000 Academic Year
    
The University of Culture has invited applications for first-year
courses for the 1999-2000 academic year.Those who passed Basic
Education High School (matriculation exam ) in A-List may apply for the
courses.
(4) Gushing out Oil Well and New Site for Drilling Inspected

    Minister for Energy arrived at Letpando oilfield in Pauk Township,
Magway Division, on 30 July. He inspected well No 1-A gushing out oil
and natural gas, progress on control of the well and new site for

drilling and measures taken for Y2K in computer-controlled system at
the liquefied petroleum gas factory. The factory will produce LPG after
the year 2000. 

(5) CD-ROM on Life of Buddha Available

    The Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana announced
on 3 August that CD-ROM on Life of Buddha, presented in four languages,
namely, Myanmar, English, Chinese and Japanese is available at K 6,000
each. It said each will cost K 5,500 for the purchase of CD-ROMs up to
20, and K 4,500 for the purchase of CD-ROMs up to 50.

(6) Conclusion of Tour Guide Course on 6 Aug

    The conclusion ceremony of the tour guide course No 1/99 conducted by
Myanmar Hotels and Tourism Services under the supervision of the
Directorate of Hotels and Tourism of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism
will be held at 9.30 am on 6 August at Karaweik Palace in Yangon.

(7) Narcotic Drugs Seized in Hsenwi

    A combined teams comprising members of regional intelligence units and
Myanmar Police Force, acting on tip-off, searched the vehicle that left
Mandalay for Muse at Yaypusan checkpoint in Hsenwi Township in Shan
State (North) on 21 July. They seized a machine used in producing
stimulants, 791.27 kilos of ephedrine powder, 1,100.05 kilos of white
chemicals and other dyes from driver Yaw Han of Muse and owner of the
vehicle Reng Hsaung (a) Reng  Khone of Mongkoe Township. Action is
being taken against them according to law.



The Government of Myanmar Welcomes Australian Human Rights
Commissioner's Visit to Myanmar and Agreement Reached to Cooperate in
the Field of Human Rights After Fruitful and Successful Discussions

    Mr. Chris Sidoti, the Commissioner of Human Rights and Equal
Opportunity Commission of Australia arrived on 1 August and left Yangon
today on 4 August after a fruitful and successful visit.
    During his stay in Yangon he met with  several senior government
officials to exchange views and explore avenues for cooperation in the
area of human rights. The meetings were described by the participants
as "frank, cordial and fruitful leading to a better  understanding and
cooperation in the field of human rights." 
    The Government feels that  these talks are helpful and believes that
these will help its citizens enjoy their rights and also learn to
accept  responsibilities as well as obligations in maintaining a stable
and responsible community as the nation makes its systematic transition
to democracy.
