THE STATEMENT OF THE CHIN NATIONAL FRONT ON THE 11TH ANNIVERSARY OF 8/8/88.
1. The 8th of August 1999 marks the 11th anniversary of the pro-democracy
movement in Burma. With the Burmese military dictatorship still continuing
to suppress and crush the pro-democracy movement even today, the memory of
those who have sacrificed for the cause of democracy is still fresh.
2. The fact that such a brutal military dictatorship can still exist to this
day is a shame as the world prepares to enter the 21st century. The military
dictatorship still exists in Burma shows a great lack of courage on the part
of the Burmese people.
3. To abolish the tyrany of the military dictatorship, a sanction against
the military dictatorship needs to be put in place by the international
community, along with more courageous steps taken by the Burmese people
themselves.
4. As it has laid down a policy of working in cooperation with neighbouring
democratic countries and other democratic forces in Burma, the CNF would
also like to appeal for cooperation from both democratic forces working in
and out of Burma.
5. By being passive about the political situation in their country, the
people of Burma will not achieve their goal of democracy and neither will
the military dictatorship be abolished. In order for a democratic government
tobe established we must all fight together to abolish the rule of the
military dictatorship. The CNF would therefore like to urge the people of
Burma to join hand in hand with the National League for Democracy and other
democratic forces whose first, second and third priorities are nothing but
the cause of democracy.
