Rangoon quiet on 11th anniversary of military deaths

The Burmese capital, Rangoon is reported to be quiet today on the 11th
anniversary of a military massacre of pro-democracy campaigners.

Nearly 3 thousand Burmese died when the military opened fire on
demonstrators on the 8th of August 1988.

In Thailand, exiled students slashed their bodies in protest at the
continuing military rule in Burma, but in Burma itself, all was calm.

The government did not deploy extra security in Rangoon and a downtown
market bustling with young people on weekends was normal.

Few people wore yellow, as had been urged by the opposition, to honour the
thousands killed a decade ago.
