Amphetamine tablets seized in Indo-Burma border town

According to a local newspaper today, the Custom Preventive Forces in
Moreh seized total 165 pieces of Amphetamine tablets on Monday from a
local resident of Moreh, which is an Indian town with Tamu of Burma. The
custom forces conducted a search after receiving information and the
drugs were recovered from Mr. B. Puniya who lived at Ward No. 3 of
Moreh, said the Imphal Free Press daily newspaper.

According to a statement of Deputy Commissioner, Custom in Imphal, the
seizure is worth Rs. 450,000 as per the international rate. Mr. Puniya
has been taken into judicial custody and sent to Imphal Central Jail. A
case was registered against him under the Narcotics Drug and
Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. Citing the statement of Deputy
Commissioner, Custom, the newspaper further mentioned that the source of
the tablets is Burma.

It is learnt that even businessmen in Moreh and Tamu are consuming these
?speed tablets? and price of a tablet is currently Rs. 70 in Moreh.
Tablets are being smuggled from Burma to Moreh, then to Madras and then
to international markets both sea and air routes.
